Pesta Sukan Ke-4, Hatyai, Thailand
| 9 September 2006
This year's Pesta Sukan MAA
may be the fourth that was held in the holiday resort
of Hatyai in Thailand but the atmosphere was so different
from previous meets. From the moment the convoy of 21
chartered buses carrying the participants crossed into
the Thai border on Friday 8th September 2006 morning till
their return on Sunday morning, there was a feeling of
a very special VIP welcome. The Mayor of Hatyai, Mr. Prai
Pattano, his deputy and top officials welcomed the contingent
at the border checkpoint and ensured everything went on
smoothly. All the way from Bangkok came Ms Sommas Siriwong
who, as the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Director
of Advertising & Public Relations Strategies Division,
together with her colleagues which included Mr. Suthep
Keasang, Director, TAT Southern Office Region 1 and Mr.
Panu Waramit, Assistant Director, TAT Southern Office
Region 1, made sure the Pesta Sukan MAA participants were
well treated, comfortable and had a great time. The gracious
hosts also gave a welcome dinner to the MAA Management
Council and Organising Committee.
Even the weather was understanding. The drizzle on
Friday stopped to allow a full Saturday of sports meet
in warm sunshine throughout the day.
At the end of the nine gruelling
events held simultaneously, UMW Toyota Motor powered through
to win seven games with a runner-up in one to retain the
coveted Pesta Sukan MAA Challenge Trophy for the fourth
consecutive time. They emerged the champions among the
13 participating teams. For those teams who made last
minute withdrawals, they missed a great outing in Hatyai
that was said to be the best so far.
